Why do we place so much value on some people and very little on others?
How come our value is placed more on those who entertain us or are owners of or workers in large multi national companies, professionals or those in academia?
This pandemic has highlighted that the people we think of the least and place little or no value on have been our lifesavers. The cleaners, the rubbish collectors, supermarket staff and delivery people, courier person, the mail person, the people at the pharmacy, the medical centre staff, doctors, nurses, hospital staff, teachers, security guards, police force, civil defence people, the foodbanks, essential retail services, the nursing and rest home workers, the ordinary person helping others in need - all of them have been essential to keep us going and in keeping us safe.
So how come we take them for granted? All human beings should be regarded and treated equally.
I have stopped watching the Grammy awards, Oscars, Miss World / Universe etc. They have no meaning for me and in my view are a collosal waste of money. Instead I want to see awards given to people for acts of kindness, for going the extra mile, for heroic deeds, for humanitarian services.
I hope this pandamic will change our perception of what is truly valuable.
Today I leave you with "Wind Beneath My Wings" by Bette Midler. One of my favourite songs that I want to dedicate to our awesome essential workers.
It must have been cold there in my shadow
To never have sunlight on your face
You were content to let me shine, that's your way
You always walked a step behind
So I was the one with all the glory
While you were the one with al the strength
A beautiful face without a name for so long
A beautiful smile to hide the pain
It might have appeared to go unnoticed
But I've got it all here in my heart
I want you to know, I know the truth, of course I know it
I would be nothing without you
Did you ever know that you're my hero?
And everything I wish I could be
I can fly higher than an eagle
When you are the wind beneath my wings

Lovely song, and a great tribute to the unsee people who are so important for us now! I agree with you, a lot seems futile.

Wind Beneath My Wings - you're playing all the good stuff here 💖
ReplyDeleteI wholeheartedly agree with your statement, and I have been feeling that way before Corona. I prefer "real" people. In fact I am suspicious of the hype that is made around the Kardashians and Hiltons of this (celebrity) world.
Interestingly my V is about values as well:

I'm 100% with you when it comes to flashy extravagant award ceremonies. Hand out awards to those that genuinely deserve them. And that song - one of my favourites as is the movie it comes from.
ReplyDeleteV is for ...
There are so many unsung heroes in this world. It's their efforts that keep this world going, I always believe.
