O Krishna - A guest post

Gayatri Aptekar is celebrating her 4th blogging anniversary and to mark that milestone, she is featuring bloggers via guest posts on her blog.

So when Gayatri asked me to be one of her guest bloggers I was so honoured.  And she made a special request for a poem.

Now poems for me are not something I can conjure up at will as I feel they are given to me from the other side. Of course I told Gayatri that would be no problem - ha! panic set in as I sat poised to write the words.

I tried to write some lines but really struggled. I can always tell that the poem isn't going to flow if the first line doesn't resonate with me. And after a few failed attempts, I sent up a silent prayer and down came the words ...

O Krishna play your bansuri (flute)
That brings me so much joy
That Universal melody
That makes my spirit fly

O Krishna ....

Read the rest of my poem on my guest post O Krishna on Gayatri's blog Outside the Kitchen Window and wish her a happy blogging anniversary.

Thanks Gayatri for giving me this opportunity and congratulations on four years of blogging.

#1000 Speak - Compassion the Soul Connection

The Dictionary.com definition of Compassion is

A feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for someone struck by misfortune,
accompanied by a desire to alleviate the suffering; mercy

But compassion for me is much more than that.

It is reaching out to another from that divine place in your heart that drives you to alleviate the suffering with kindness, understanding, caring and love.

Its essence lies in the soul and it is from the soul that you connect with another asking nothing in return. True compassion goes beyond empathy and sympathy, it is not just heart centric but soul centric.

So how do you show compassion?

I don't think there is any clear answer to that for each circumstance will be different. Sometimes it may be a kind word, or just a smile, or a little help, or a hug, or perhaps even fighting for some rights. Sometimes it might just be a universal reaching out and caring.  But at all times it comes from one's heart and makes a selfless soul connection.

If your compassion does not include yourself, it is incomplete ~ Gautama Buddha

The above quote is often interpreted as compassion for oneself. I read it quite differently. Showing compassion that is not heart and soul centric (does not include yourself), is incomplete.

There is so much violence in the world today it seems the human race has become indifferent to the sufferings of others. But perhaps it is not too late to teach our children the meaning of compassion so that future generations may find that place within to reach out to another with love and kindness.

So how do we teach our children compassion?  That comes when we ourselves show it to them and others near and far.

Compassion is not an action it is soul centred emotion that leads to a heartfelt action. Sometimes that action could be just a sincere silent prayer.

Wishing you a day filled with kindness and love.

Reach out to someone today and make a soul connection.

Life Races By

I usually read on the bus as that's the only time I get a chance to pull out my book so I do enjoy the ride and along the way I look up once or twice and take in the sights.

But day before yesterday the usual 20-30 minutes took about 12 minutes - the bus driver was in a hurry and driving quite fast and there was also very little traffic on the road, the bus was also quite empty so didn't make that many stops.

When I looked up from my book I was about 3 stops away from mine and I felt quite cheated that the ride was a short one or perhaps I was so engrossed in my book I just forgot about time. And then I got to thinking about life.

Life sometimes just races by while we are absorbed in the daily drama and we forget to actually stop and savour life. We are so intent on reaching our goals and are so dogged in our approach to reaching them that we forget that the actual enjoyment of life is the journey and not the destination and that there are so many other things in life to experience.

Note to self: Don't hurry through life, enjoy all the experiences that life brings, don't wear blinkers, look around and see the world (and I don't mean travel).

And this week it's been fun watching a lot of exciting, enjoyable entertainment - The Cricket World Cup. Even Google joined in the fun

Five Minute Friday - When

When life is humming and it is joyful, some of us are grateful and give thanks to God, some of us forget and claim life to be in our control and grasp, that we created and steered our own destiny.

When life is hard and we struggle, some of us turn to God for help and comfort, and some of us are angry at Him and blame Him for dishing out these hardships.

When major transformational change occurs in our lives through joy or hardship, these are moments when an opportunity to know God is presented. And then having lived through that, they provide us the means of Divine devotion. And from that some of us then claim to have surrendered to God. But surrender is not an easy thing to do.

When is surrender truly surrender? This is my interpretation of surrender and of course each will have their own.

When both sorrow and joy are accepted and treated alike
When we no longer work in outcomes and destinies and desire control
When the actions of others no longer upset us
When we no longer think of the fruits but only our actions
When all actions are done in love for Universal good and dedicated to God
When actions undertaken in helping others is done silently in joyfulness without need for appreciation or reciprocation.
When the only pride we have is in the love of the Divine.
When with every breath we take we are mindful of the Cosmic Breath
When we have made complete peace with our past and it no longer affects us adversely
When we are at peace with the present and ourselves
When we are at peace with the future without knowing what it is. But just knowing that it is just as it should be.
When we choose to be in the flow of the Universal force and we trust it unflinchingly.
When in every moment (good and bad) we can feel His bliss and know His truth.
When our only desire is to know God.

Then we have surrendered to Him and we are in a state of  Sat Chit Ananda

Sat = Absolute/Divine Truth/Existence
Chit = Divine Consciousness / Love
Ananda = Divine Bliss

How do you define Surrender?

~x~

I am the source of all spiritual and material universes,
for everything emanates from Me.
Knowing this, the wise engage in My devotional service
and worship Me with all their hearts.

Saving Face

This evening as I was returning home from work on the bus, a strange event took place.

As I settled into my seat I put my hand up to remove my sunnies which is a real odd thing to do considering that the sun was shining straight into my eyes.

As my hand started its journey down from my face, this man's backpack came smack in front of my face.  But as my hand was covering it, it hit my hand (quite hard) instead.

If my hand hadn't been where it was, that backpack would have whacked me right in my face.

Was it coincidence that just at that moment I did something I never normally would've done or was someone looking after me from the other side?

All I can say is thank you to that benevolent being who made me do the silliest thing and yet save my face (literally).

Five Minute Friday - Keep

Contrary to last week's Five Minute Friday post, where nothing came to mind, this week it's just the opposite. So many thoughts flooding my mind for the word Keep.

I tried to stick to one theme, but the mind persists in moving in all directions. So in keeping with the way my life moves by going with the flow, I'm going with all the thoughts that are pouring in.

So here goes ...

Keep the faith when doubts start to creep in and keep hope alive no matter what. Keep the love in your heart and do all your work in the spirit of love. Love, Faith and Hope are the essence of life.

Keep the good memories alive for they bring us joy and light up those dark moments.

Keep all things authentic because keeping up appearances and trying to be someone we are not is very tiring.

Keep trying and don't give up. Sometimes success is just round the corner and too often we give up that wee bit too soon.

Keep your thoughts positive. All things are possible when we believe we can.

Keep life balanced. Trying to do many things does justice to none. Stop sometimes and smell the roses.

Keep life simple. Life just flows a lot more easily when life is uncomplicated.

Keep your focus on the important things in your life. My kids are my focus for they are my strength and joy and the breath of my life.

Keep Him forever in  our hearts and in our mind. For His love and care keep us going when life seems hard. That's certainly true for me.

What keeps you going?
~x~

Those who see Me in all things, and all things in Me, are never lost to Me,
nor am I ever lost to them

Taking Chances

Sometimes in life we have to take chances. But how brave are we to chuck it all away and take that step over the cliff and how do we know that it is time to take that leap of faith.

I guess I've been lucky that when it has been time to take a different path, the Universe has somehow forced me onto that road.

This afternoon my daughter called to say that she was ready to take a leap of faith.

For a few minutes the very human tendency to resist came in and I tried to reason with her that chucking it all away may not be a good option. She was determined and I relented.

Then sitting quietly and pondering on it, my instincts told me she was on the right track.

Sometimes in life we have to take chances. How often have you taken that leap of faith?
