Expectation can ... #atozchallenge letter E

My theme for the 2017 AtoZ Challenge is "Daily Thoughts".

Each day I will post a thought that comes to mind. The first word of the thought will correspond with the letter of the day.

So here is my thought for the letter E

Nelson, New Zealand

Expectation can breed disharmony and be the curse of happiness.

We have so many expectations in life, of places, things and people. If we are lucky are expectations are met. But if they aren't then disappointment sets in creating disharmony and sadness.

Recently on a trip to Nelson in the South Island of New Zealand, we took a drive to a few beaches. They were so beautiful until we landed up at one in low tide. I was a tad disappointed because it looked pretty barren and the sea was so far away. For a moment it robbed me of my happiness because I expected it to be just like the others. Instead I should've admired and appreciated its own beauty.

Rugby season is on in New Zealand. Whenever I used to watch the All Blacks (The NZ Rugby team) play, I expected them to win and on the occasions when they lost, it would truly ruin my day. How unfair that we all expect them to win every game. Now I watch their games for the thrill of the game for enjoyment of what it is and not for the winning or losing.

Expectation will you let me down
Or will you my every wish fulfill
Why rely on you if you make me frown
When I can rely on my own will

Expectation I have only a few
Life is certainly happier
For when a wish comes out of the blue
Then I am filled with wonder

~x~

  2. It's tricky isn't it? I remember laughing when I heard someone tell me that their New Year's Resolution was to lower their expectations. That way she wouldn't be disappointed. It was such a novel idea to me. And yet I wonder if we would achieve half of what we achieve if we didn't set expectations for ourselves. So..as I say...tricky...I have felt "sick" with expectation or excitedness at the thought of going to a party when I was a child...once I became aware of my feeling, it dissipated. As usual, I am sitting on the fence when it comes to whether or not we should have expectations, lower them or raise them.

  4. I think its important to have high expectations of ourselves if we want to achieve anything. With other things, maybe it's easier to let go and just appreciate what it is

  5. Expectation, specially when you have from a person, can lead to a lot of disappointment... It's very hard to not have one, but I am learning slowly to not make my happiness depend on someone or something else. Wonderful poem Suzy.

  6. Years ago, my husband and I took a trip out to the western United States. We kept passing beautiful scenery after beautiful scenery but our destination was supposed to be exceptionally beautiful. So I just impatiently didn't enjoy what we were passing through. When we got to our destination - it was a disappointment. Great expectations dashed. I should have paid attention.

  7. One of the many lessons I've learned in Midlife is to not let your expectations set you up for disappointment. I tend to expect lots and find the reality doesn't meet that and I'm ultimately disappointed. Better to keep your expectations low and be delightfully surprised :)

  8. I agree Suzy. Whenever we expect things, we get disappointed if that doesn't happen. Even when things happen, we are just barely satisfied as opposed to happy or excited. But when we don't have any expectations, even smallest of things make us happy.

  9. If we can be happy with what we find, and not what we expected, then it's really blissful. :-)

  10. Expectations do lead to disappointments more often than not. I'd say expect the best from your self and accept everything else as it is.

    1. Oh Bellybytes my life is far from boring. If only you knew of all the adventures I've had with little expectations and all the moments that took my breath away.

  12. Very True Suzy! Expectations are the mother of all trouble, especially in a family. When you do not expect anything and get even a small thing, you end up being happy. whe you expect and get something less than your expectation, you still remain very disappointed.

  13. Oh yes, expectations hurt. It's best not to expect anything from anyone. When you don't expect, every moment is a surprise and every surprise brings happiness.

  14. Well, no matter how much we know this fact, we still end up expecting. Such is the nature of human mind.

  16. Expectations are detrimental I agree dear. But expecting is human nature. I find it too difficult to resist. Hope some day I get better on it :)

  18. Expectations are too tricky to handle for me as I am a very emotional person. I wear my heart on the sleeve n end up being hurt all the time. But I wonder how I survive in my relationships if I don't have any 😊

  19. I think it is human to have expectations, Suzy! But it is also important to see things as they are and not as we want them to be. Of course I've felt let down...and it took experience to teach me better. Hugs! I am enjoying your series!

  21. Suzy, It's difficult to not be disappointed when one's expectations aren't met. I was sorta thinking about this the other day. This year, I had hopes that we'd get into a new house and then suddenly DH needed emergency on his eye. He had retina detachment. He's two weeks post-op but healing could take as long as a year. He'll have numerous follow-up appointments and is facing possible cataract surgery before the year ends. With all of this unfolding before us, it's going to be next to impossible for us to give house hunting and moving a lot of serious thought but the good thing is I believe DH's eye is going to be ok and that's far more important than a new house. Thank you for stopping by for my latest edition of Art Sketching Through the Alphabet with the letter "E" (elephant, eagle, elk)! Happy a2zing!

  22. I like your quote "All roads lead to your destiny". I never thought about it this way. Yes, I'll have to write that one down and remember it. Have a great day & love your picture too! hugs Nice to kinda meet you. Tried to follow you, but all I get is an "Whoops... error", I have physical therapy right now so I'll try again later.

  23. This is so very true! Expectations can kill a lot of things in the real relationship!
Most of the problem starts because of the expectations we have in our heads!
