I Missed Blogging #writebravely #WriteTribeProBlogger #MondayMusings

After the A to Z Challenge way back in April, I somehow lost my writing muse. I couldn't get myself to pen anything down.

Sometimes life throws us a few curved balls that need to be attended to and that means some things have to take a back seat. Unfortunately for me that was blogging.

But I missed it and the interactions with my fellow bloggers. So a challenge is a great way to re-start my blogging and re-connect with blogger friends.

I have no theme for this challenge, but one never knows, a theme may suddenly emerge.

And when you are lost for words, find a quote and share it. So in keeping with the last few months when life decided to get just a wee bit difficult, here's a quote from the book The Afterlife of Billy Fingers by Annie Kagan.

Turn to nature to pardon some of the difficulty you have to bear.
Nature has more light than anything else on your planet.
~ Billy Fingers

If you haven't read this book, I highly recommend it. You can enjoy it as a story or look deeper into its meaning.

Inspirational and motivational quotes is what has kept me going and helped me cope with the tough times.

So how do you cope when life throws you a curved ball?  Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Ultimate Dinner Party Guest List - #MondayMusings #MicroblogMonday

The I Must Confess prompt for this week is My Ultimate Dinner Party Guest List. I am going to choose those who are still alive in this world rather than those that have passed on. So here goes ...

The Dalai Lama - I have heard so much about the Dalai Lama. Those who have had the privilege of meeting him tell me there is such a spiritual air about him, a divine aura, such a sense of happiness and peace. I want to bask for a moment in that Divine Energy.

Deepak Chopra - I read his book Synchrodestiny many years ago and every word resonated with me. I love this book and I'd like to hear his philosophies first hand. I believe that books find me and this was no exception. I had heard a lot about his books but they were so expensive and somehow didn't ignite any interest. Then one day browsing through a table of discounted books I chanced upon Synchrodestiny for a throwaway price and all because someone had put a felt pen mark on the cover. I not only loved the title but I was so drawn to it I had to buy it. Never regretted that decision.

Dr Brian Weiss - I am fascinated by his books and his theories of past lives, future lives and lives in between. Only Love Is ReaI is one of my favourite books. I would love to get a more comprehensive view of his theories and to have a deeper understanding of the other side. Perhaps a past life regression session might be tempting too.

Helen Clark - Head of the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) and former Prime Minister of New Zealand. I have a great admiration for her. During her tenure as PM when so many countries gave in to pressure from the US, she stood firm that New Zealand would not participate in any war not endorsed by the United Nations. It was obviously not a popular stance with the US who declared you are either with us or against us. She was unfazed by these threats and resolute in her decision.  And my admiration for her grew. Someday I would love to work for the UNDP or at least in humanitarian services in global aid programmes particularly in the arena of children. Who better than Helen Clark to point me in the right direction.

Richard Gere - He is one of my favourite actors. But it his affinity to Buddhism and India that fascinates me. I'd like to find out about his spiritual evolution.

Krishna Das - An American vocalist of Hindu devotional music (Kirtan). He is an amazing singer and his music can put me into a meditative state. He sings with so much love and devotion. An evening of Kirtan with him would be the icing on the cake. I love his Heart as Wide as the World cd (you can listen to some song clips via that link).

Would love to know your guest list. Share yours in a post and link it to I Confess #IMC - Ultimate Dinner Party Guest List or just leave your list in the comments.

#MondayMusings - If I Only Knew

If I only knew  ...

Some years ago I had this sudden urge to write a book. I even have a name ready for it. Actually I saw the name in a dream and it felt so right. I know when my book does eventually take shape, that this will be the perfect title for it.

But wanting to write a book and actually writing one are two very different things.

For one, what would my book be about?

Fiction writing is not my strength yet it seems fiction seems to do better than fact.

Or should I write about spiritual insights? But there are so many spiritual writers and frankly most of them write the same things in different words.

Or should I publish my poems? But poetry isn't everyone's cup of tea and often I find that the meaning I am trying to portray is lost on my readers. Perhaps my poetry is too complex. And lately the poetry mojo seems to have dropped by the wayside. I haven't written a poem for months.

Lately I've been trying my hand at Romantic Fiction (short stories) but with a spiritual message / background. I'm enjoying these a lot. Sometimes I think these may not be true fiction.  That is somewhere inside me I feel I've lived these stories before. Or maybe I'm just dreaming. But are they good enough to publish?

In April I took part  in the A to Z Challenge and my theme was based on the historical epic The Ramayana but with a very different view. My series was based on a combination of poetry and prose and friends who have read my posts think I should expand on it and create my book. But The Ramayana is dear to the heart of many Indians so how would my twist be received?

And then there's the publishing itself. I haven't got a clue how to go about doing that.

If I only knew what I need to write.

If I only knew how to publish a book.

If I only knew!

What do you think? Would love your thoughts.

Inequality - By whose yardstick?

For the Write Tribe Festival - Rediscovering your blogging groove

Day 6 - Ask a question on Inequality

Inequality is defined by the Free Dictionary as

The lack of equality, as of opportunity, treatment, or status

We find inequality in all things: there is educational inequality, social inequality, gender inequality, wealth inequality,  We are always comparing one against the other. We are either too thin or too fat, too short or too tall, rich or poor, aristocratic or uncultured, educated or illiterate, powerful or meek, in high positions or low ones, highly paid or not paid enough, favoured or picked on, privileged or underprivileged. We've even brought discrimination into religious beliefs. And by this list alone, inequality paints a pretty bleak picture.

But the Libra in me needs to look at both sides of the coin.  Inequality provides us the means to improve our lot in life, to grow and expand our knowledge. Perhaps even more importantly to learn to make peace with our lives, to learn humility and compassion, to learn to overcome hardships, to share and help, and to learn contentment. For if all things were equal and there was nothing more to do, then what would be the point of life itself?

There is of course gender inequality that does need to be addressed particularly in patriarchal societies where women and girls really do get the raw end of the stick. But perhaps if we shifted our focus to the wonderful things that women and girls have achieved rather than focussing on the atrocities, we might create that shift in thinking. You know, collective consciousness is powerful.

This morning as I was reading my book these words jumped out at me:

"Never assume that anyone is fortunate or unfortunate because of the way things appear to be. Fortune or misfortune is just a human way of measuring."

And that got me thinking about inequality from a spiritual perspective.

Can I be sure that your life is better than mine or that mine is better than someone elses? We each walk our own path and we each have a pre planned blueprint of our life.  By whose yardstick do we measure equality? So my question is:

Do we have the right to change the course of someone's soul learning by obliterating inequality?

Probably not and chances are that we will be unable to.

We do however have the right to fight for the injustices and atrocities that are conducted in the name of inequality or by circumstances created by it. And along the way we shall win some and we shall lose some and perhaps fighting to obliterate injustices and atrocities and thereby create a better world is the point of it all.

May you find the means to make peace with your life.

Book Review

For the Write Tribe Festival - Rediscovering your blogging groove

Day 3 - Write a Review

I am convinced that books find me. So when a friend shared a picture from the facebook page The Afterlife of Billy Fingers, I was intrigued, And from there I was led to buy the kindle version of the book. So here is my review of that book.

Book: The Afterlife Of Billy Fingers
Author: Annie Kagan

What the book is about

In The Afterlife of Billy Fingers: How My Bad-Boy Brother Proved to Me There's Life After Death, Kagan shares the extraordinary story of her after death communications (ADC) with her brother Billy, who began speaking to her just weeks after his unexpected death. taken from Amazon.com

Billy described to Annie his journey back to his spiritual home and along the way he relayed some delightful insights into life and death.

My views on the book

Written in simple language, it was a very easy read. There were parts of the book particularly towards the end that seemed a bit far fetched but of course this is about the afterlife so who knows what really abounds there.

On the whole it was uplifting and inspirational, a book you could pick up and refer to again and again. I am reading the book again and I find that I am enjoying it more on the second read and the messages seem deeper and more meaningful.

Some quotes from the book to give you a little glimpse into what you might expect from it:

A shift in perspective makes the particles in your Universe dance to new possibilities

We signed up to do this dance together before we were born

Get rid of beliefs that keep you running around following rules others have set down

I enjoyed the book and its messages resonated with me as a lot of what I read was what I believe too. Maybe the Universe sent this along as confirmation of my own beliefs.

If you are on a spiritual journey, this book may provide the means to expand your mind. If you don't believe in the afterlife, it may open your mind to that possibility.  And if you are steadfast in your own beliefs then it may just be an interesting story to read and perhaps ponder over another day.

My rating: 4 stars and highly recommended.

Happy Reading

Book Love

Written for the Write Tribe Festival of Words #3 Day 4 - Book Review

I'm taking part in the Write Tribe Festival of Words -3

Many years ago when I got married, my best friend had already moved to the US. Unfortunately she couldn't make it to my wedding but she sent me a wedding card and in it she wrote these lines:

Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping.
For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.
And stand together yet not too near together:
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow.

These are words from Kahlil Gibran's book, The Prophet, my favourite book of all time. It's one of my most treasured gifts that I got from my workmates in India when I left for New Zealand.

The book opens with the Prophet Almustafa leaving the city of Orphalese. He's about to board his ship when  he is stopped by a group of people who ask him to enlighten them on life.

The book is divided into chapters dealing with different stages of life and circumstances, human values and conditions and each chapter is written in poetic form. As I love poetry, this style of this book  appeals to me greatly.

This is a book that truly grows on you. Each time I read it, I understand the words a little bit better. One can read this as a story or take a spiritual meaning from it.

But one has to read it to experience it for oneself.

UBC Day 15 - The Alchemist

Written for:
Day 15 Ultimate Blog Challenge
The Writer's Post Blog Hop hosted by Kajal Kapur
The Letter A at ABC Wednesday

The prompt:
Write about one such movie that you watched in 2013, that touched your heart. It can be a movie of any genre- drama, musical, thriller, action, spy, anything. The only condition being that you must highlight at least one such point in your post that shows how the movie made a connect with you. How it spoke to you!
In case you are not a ‘movie’ person, never mind at all! Write about a book you read this last year, which you think, if turned into a movie would be a blockbuster.

In 2006 when in a state of "what shall I read now", a friend handed me her copy of "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho. I couldn't put the book down and soon after went out and got my own copy. And last year I got the kindle version of the book.

The book takes you on Santiago's personal journey to find his treasure, to fulfil his personal legend. His journey starts when he has a recurrent dream. The boy has many strange adventures and learns to read the signs of the Universe. A beautifully written book that can be read as an interesting story or if you dig deep you find many hidden gems of wisdom, and spiritual lessons.

I've lost count of how many times I've read this book. And there are many treasures in this book. But each time I read it, the one jewel that consistently jumps out for me is that the Universe gives us clues all through the journey of life. We don't always listen but when we do and learn to decipher its clues, we uncover great treasures.

"And when you want something,
all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it"

I would love to see a movie made from this book. It's a very easy book to read and it had everything - interesting characters, adventure, mystery, a wee bit of romance as well.

UBC Day 4 The Watched Read It List

Day 4 Ultimate Blogging Challenge

Oprah's 2nd Question

The Watched/Read It List

Right now, write down the name of the book you're reading and the last movie you saw. Keeping a list of all the books you have read and movies you have seen will help you remember where your mind has been and also, over time, will reveal your changing tastes and moods. Like any journal, the list will start to show you your own patterns. It must mean something, for example, that every 10 years you go through a vampire stage, then a poetry palate cleanser, before diving into some classics. And if you keep a list, you won't ever have to reread the first hundred pages of Finnegans Wake before realizing why things seem so familiar.

The book I have just finished reading is "Dying To Be Me" by Anita Moorjhani. I have mixed feelings about this one. There were a couple of pearls within it, but somehow overall she told me nothing new.

The book I am currently reading is "Signals From The Soul" by Ann Mueller. Again some pearls, and some parts that made me feel very uncomfortable (almost felt like she was trying to gain a lot of sympathy - got that from Anita's book as well).

The book lined up to read is "Miracles Happen" by Dr Brian Weiss. I love his books. They are a delight to read because they are so easy to read and they always leave me feeling happy. Looking forward to reading this book.

The last movie I saw - Sleepless in Seattle - just a couple of days ago on TV. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are my favourite actors so any movie of theirs is a must watch. I've lost count of how many times I've seen this one.

There are perhaps no days of our childhood we lived so fully as those we spent with a favourite book. ~ Marcel Proust

Happy Reading, Happy Watching

Very Unique and Wonderful Xmas - bring together the letters U V W and X for ABC Wednesday.

Xmas for me is a time to relax and wind down, a time to give and receive.

I got some very creative gifts this Xmas from the blogging world:

  • A review of my blog from Karan - One of Santa's many elves who took part in the secret santa xchange. Karan gave my blog a really nice review and I was blown away by the comments on that post.
  • The Write Tribe Anthology - a collection of favourite posts from 36 bloggers, put together by Vidya Sury. An awesome book that I will cherish forever. Vidya made a dream come true of having a poem of mine published in a book. This e-book is free to read and/or download (click here for instructions)
Thanks Vidya and Karan for rounding off my year with these ultra awesome gifts.

But the part of Xmas that I enjoy the most is putting up the tree and decorations and buying my little ornaments that are gifts for my children, a tradition I started when my son was born. It's such a joyous time to spend together.

So here are some postcard views of  my Xmas pictures

The Write Tribe Anthology Book 1

Vidya Sury who blogs at Vidyasury.com celebrated her 50th birthday this year. She wanted to do something special not in receiving but in giving.

So she requested bloggers to submit one of their posts in order to compile an e-book. This book is The Write Tribe Anthology Book 1 and is a compilation of those favourite posts that Vidya has painstakingly put together to form this book.

Thank you Vidya for this awesome Christmas present, one I will cherish forever.

This gift was also made possible by Corinne who blogs at Everyday Gyaan and by one quiet little elf Vaisakh who worked tirelessly in the background and blogs at The Museum Piece.

The book was brought to us by The Write Tribe

Please click on the book or the link below it  to read or download for free.

I selected my post "Caller ID" (pdf page 93) from my poetry blog Relections Of My Soul

This poem is extra special to me as it was inspired by an astounding event that took place early this year. Let's just say this was my moment of liberation, of realisation, of greater understanding.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

And I also hope you enjoy the amazing posts that are contained in this book.

Thanks again to Vidya and Corinne for making a dream come true.

Wishing you all many joys and blessings.

My Personal Journey with Books

I am taking part in the Write Tribe Festival Of Words 8th - 14th December 2013

So today's personal journey is with "Books"

I am convinced that books find us not the other way round. That when the Universe wants to give us a message, it sends a book our way.

Some years ago I went book shopping at lunchtime to buy one that someone had recommended. I can't remember the name of the book but I do remember that I never got around to buying it.

As I walked into the aisle and started browsing through the titles, this book caught my eye. However as I was on the lookout for another book, I gave it a glance, and walked off in search of the recommended book.

I couldn't find it anywhere. Instead, the other book came into view again and again. Until unexpectedly while reaching for another book, it just dropped out of the bookshelf and onto the floor near my feet. I was so drawn to it, that I finally picked it up, paid for it and walked out of the store. The recommended book long forgotten and never bought.

That book was Dan Millman's Way of the Peaceful Warrior. It's one of my favourite books and since then Dan Millman has become one of my favourite authors.

The way of the Peaceful Warrior was one of the turning points in my spiritual journey and at the time, summed up the meaning of life for me:
Where are you Dan?  Here
What time is it?  Now
What are you?  This moment.

There are some real gems of wisdom in this book. I read this often and each time I discover something new. But the peaceful warriors path is not an easy one at the start.

Friday Fives - Book 'Em

As I am into reading right now this is a good one to attempt.
    (taken from Friday5.org)

1. What book did you struggle to get through but is something you're glad you've read?
E.M. Foster's A Passage to India - was my book for Literature at University and was such a drag
to read. Any book that you have to study is always a hard read. But I'm still glad I read it.

2. What's a book whose popularity has baffled you?
Arundhati Roy's  God of Small Things - this book made no sense to me at all. Perhaps I should
    attempt reading it again.

3. If you could make everyone you know read one book, what would it be?
Dan Millman's Way of the Peaceful Warrior - This book summed up the meaning of Life for me.

4. What book have you liked less and less as time has gone by?
I don't think there is any book that falls into this category. I either like a book or don't.

5. What book have you loved more and more as time has gone by?
Brian Weiss' Only Love is Real - a book that provides hope and an understanding of relationships
    from a spiritual perspective.

Please share your fives. Would love to read your answers.

Warm Regards

I Love Quotes - Dan Millman - 3 Rules of Life

Life has 3 rules - Paradox, Humour, and Change
Paradox - Life is a mystery;
don't waste your time trying to figure it out
Humour - Keep a sense of humour, especially about yourself.
It is a strength beyond all measure
Change - Know that nothing ever stays the same.
Dan Millman, Way of the Peaceful Warrior

Dan Millman is one of my favourite authors and I love this quote.

We all come with our own destiny and path. We may have a gut feel about the events that are to occur but we probably won't figure out how, when and where. If life isn't a mystery, there would be no fun in discovering it. So go with the flow.

Humour can diffuse a tense situation. Noticed how those who can laugh at themselves are the ones people want to be with. As they say, laugh and the world laughs with you; weep and you weep alone.

Change is constant (an oxymoron). Good times do not stay forever, nor do the bad times. Expect change and embrace it. It's when we resist change, that things become difficult. If life did not change constantly, it would be extremely dull.

List It - Karate - What it means to me.

When I started Karate 3 years ago, I took it up purely as a sport and martial art. To advance to the next belt was my only aim.

Then about a year ago it dawned on me that for me it was more than a sport and martial art and earning the next belt was no longer important or the focus for me.

I believe that we progress just enough to get what we require from an event or experience and I think I reached that with Karate a year ago.

Karate for me took on a different meaning. So what does Karate mean to me?

o  Keeps me in Balance
Practicing kata (detailed patterns of movement) engage both the right and left side of your brain and
    body. It keeps me balanced

o  Takes me to a State of Zen
When I am stressed or feel out of sorts, performing kata and the basic karate movements helps
to relieve stress. The kiai (short exhalation during a strike) is particularly helpful at
relieving stress as when done correctly, it channels the energy within into a destructive force. It
requires timing and focus and hence a clear mind. Relieving stress takes me back to a state of Zen.

o  Sharpens the mind
Karate demands focus as movements need to be undertaken with precision and right technique.
In a class it also means keeping up in synchronized harmony with the rest of the karatekas.
The mind must be engaged at every second. The same applies during kumite (sparring) as even a
momentary lapse in concentration can lose the match for you.

o  Keeps me Fit
Karate is very demanding on the body. My fitness levels absolutely soared after I first started.
And I also lost a lot of weight.  It's a great fitness regime.

o  It's a Meditation
Kata is meditative as it is a coordinated pattern of movements. As in the kiai, it requires timing,
focus and clear thinking. After a while, it becomes quite hypnotic if you are in "the zone".

o  My Spiritual Practice
Karate requires the synchronized engagement of body, mind and soul. Karate demonstrates the
concept of "Be here now" perfectly which is the essence of a spiritual practice.
Dan Millman illustrates this concept perfectly in his book "The Way of the Peaceful Warrior".
          Where are you Dan?  Here
          What time is it?  Now
          What are you?  This moment.
To be in "the karate zone" you need to be here, now, in this moment.

o Teaches me to use circumstances to my advantage
During kumite you always study and understand your opponent. Then you quickly learn 3 things -
        -  exploit your opponents weak points to make a strike
        -  use your opponents strengths to your advantage (eg defend instead of attack)
        -  take them by surprise - change the pattern
You can apply the same to everyday circumstances. For example, at work,
        -  when in difficult situations use the strengths of a coworker to help you or
        -  if something isn't working and you've tried over and over again, change the pattern,
           try something different.
In all honesty I do not enjoy kumite, I am not even good at it, but that's not important.
What's important is that it has taught me skills that help me everyday particularly at work.

I love karate. I no longer strive for belts, I don't need to. Karate is now more a way of life for me.

Thank you Sensei Scott for introducing karate to me. You are an inspiration.

Osu.

No Ordinary Moments

A few days ago I  had an interview at 9.00 am and decided not to chance being late by taking the bus.  So instead I indulged and took a taxi.

I had allowed for 50 mins in case of slow traffic but found myself zooming into town and getting in with half an hour to spare.

I thought I would stop by and say hello to my daughter but found her shop hadn't opened yet so I decided to walk to my favourite shop - Farmers.

Instead I found myself turning into Borders and up the escalator to my favourite section - Mind Body and Spirit.

I turned into the aisle and stopped right in front of a book that jumped out at me - No Ordinary Moments by Dan Millman.

In the last 16 months I have been to Borders several times - no books have jumped out at me. The urge to go into the bookstore hasn't been there either.

So when my feet took me in and stopped dead in front of this book, I knew I had to buy it.

Dan Millman is one of my favourite authors and strange but true his other books also jumped out at me at Borders - Way of the Peaceful Warrior and The Journeys of Socrates. They belong to my collection of favourite books and No Ordinary Moments is also proving to be one I can add to that.

This post is triggered from a paragraph in the book. A distinct and strong urge to write this post came over me as I read it.

"Life comforts the disturbed and disturbs the comfortable. Sometimes, out of nowhere, Spirit lands a left hook that really shakes us up; we get slammed into the ropes, knocked to the canvas. Maybe the shock comes in the form of a financial crisis, a death in the family, a divorce, or an illness or injury. Hard times provide opportunities that don't come around when life is comfortable."

In the next few posts I will share some  of the major left hooks that Spirit has bestowed upon me, ropes I've slammed into and canvases I've been knocked into and the lessons each event has taught me.
