UBC Day 13 - 6WS - Friendship

Day 13 of the Ultimate Blogging Challenge and time for Six Word Saturday.

Friendship - real or virtual, it's there.

At Queens Wharf Wellington

Corinne at Everyday Gyaan posted a really great topic and post on Friendship. I started to leave a comment that got waaaaaay too long so decided to blog about it instead. Corinne's question was:

Do you think we need to redefine friendship in this age of social media?

I decided to take a spiritual view on this and hence the basis for my answer.

People come into our lives for a reason - some stay a short while and some stay on forever. Some resonate with us and some don't. Some annoy us and some uplift us. But they all come into our sphere for a reason.

When I was young I had hundreds of pen pals. That was about 40 years ago. Some pals gave me great joy, some were just there to perhaps learn about a new country and it's culture. I still correspond with 4 of them and of these I have met 2 who visited me when I lived in India. These 4 wonderful people have journeyed with me through school, university, and all the other events of my life big and small, and I with them. I have the most amazing friendship with them. I cannot imagine my life without them.

I have connected with a wide variety of people through blogging. The same story repeats - some you resonate with, some you don't - but they are all there for a reason.  I have learned so much from each one's blogs - not just about them but about our world as well. I feel connected to them in some way.

Then there are the people I have met and known. Some of them I have known all my life and who are still in my sphere as dear to me as they were before. And then there are some I have met in recent times who are my dear friends now. Each of them brings a different experience into my life.

As we journey through life, our "friendship frequency" changes and with that the dynamics of our sphere. In the end it does not matter how they come into my sphere or the basis of their friendship. The how, breadth, depth and definition become irrelevant.

I love the words of this Elton John song that sum up my thoughts quite nicely:

There's a time for everyone if they only learn
That the twisting kaleidoscope moves us all in turn
There's a rhyme and reason to the wild outdoors
When the heart of this star-crossed voyager beats in time with yours
~ from Can you feel the love tonight

(using poetic licence here for star-crossed - as in across the Universe)

Enjoy the moments you share with each one - near or far, known or unknown, young or old, the ones you resonate with or the ones with whom you don't, long standing or new. For we are all connected and there are no chance "meetings".

When a blade of grass is cut, the whole Universe quivers
~ The Upanishads (Hindu philosophical texts)

I love this quote on friendship:

Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: "What! You too? I thought I was the only one.”
~ C.S. Lewis

Haven't posted a music post for a while so enjoy "Can you feel the love tonight".

Wishing you a day of uplifting moments and many friendships. And please share your thoughts on friendship.

Warm Regards

  1. The C. S. Lewis quote is one of my favorites. Such special friendships are formed when we find those common interests and connect around them.

Isn't it awesome when a post inspires a comment that turns into it's own post? :)

  3. Suzy! I just love that you have a sun symbol after your name! I have been called Suzanna Sunshine once or twice along the way.

Really enjoyed this blog. The CS lewis quote really resonates with me. It is hilarious how when I keep my mind open the most unlikely "friendships" are born.

Thanks for this work, keep it up! You are a born writer and connecter.

    To your happiness & harmony,
    Susan

  4. I just left Corinne's blog, and my reply got a little long, too. I should've followed your lead and done my own post. ;-)

Anyway, I agree that everyone is in our lives for a reason, sort of like they say about learning from people: they either teach you what to do or what *not* to do.

And, as I mentioned over there, I have two very dear friends that I met via the internet originally. We have since gotten together in person (and hope to do so again this summer), but that doesn't change the fact that we've had a friendship for years that exists mostly virtually.

And, as others, love the Lewis quote.

    1. Thanks Cheri. Social networking has certainly opened up the world and each other to all of us. And I'm so glad.

  5. Friendship is so important! Some of my virtual friends I have known for years now and treasure them as much as my dear 'real-life' friends. In fact, real friends are ral friends wherever you find them and even if you never meet in person. Yes, I know we are all connected, and I love that quote about the blade of grass. I had not come across that one before; now I'm going to post it on facebook!

  6. Love that song by Elton John. I think social media has defined friends for us, but we know who our real friends are. I've loved meeting new ones through Facebook and, like you, I had a pen pal growing up (just one though). We lost touch for nearly two decades until the magic of Facebook, and we finally got to meet in person! I've also met a couple of other writer friends and I treasure the relationships I have with them. as well as with the friends I knew before Facebook. Happy Writing!

    1. Thanks Theresa. I love the song too - it has such a deep meaning. FB has been great in connecting up old friends. I've connected with many school friends I had lost touch with for nearly 35 years. Thanks for dropping by.

  7. I love the slant you've taken on this, Suzy. Yes, it's true that every person comes into our life for a reason - sometimes we wonder what it is ;) - there is one alright.
    So glad we're connected! :)

  13. This is such a wonderful post, Suzy! It's good to stop once in a while and reassess our friendships from past to present. While some friendships are sweeter than others, I still believe in being grateful for everyone that comes along.

    1. oh how awesome to meet your hubby online. Yes, the writing community is very welcoming online. Technology has it's downsides but the rewards of technical innovation truly outweigh it's disadvantages (my view anyway).
