B is for ...  Byrd Memorial

Thought I would showcase my city of Wellington.

Richard Byrd was an American aviator who mounted many expeditions to Antarctica from his base in New Zealand.

Here are pictures of the Byrd Memorial on Mt Victoria in Wellington, New Zealand constructed in his honour. It was unveiled on 11 March 1962, the 5th anniversary of his death.

I took this picture from the viewing platform at Mt Vic.

Here's a close up I took of the memorial

The sides of the memorial are decorated in tiles representing the Aurora Australis, the Southern Lights and 

the stones that make up the internal wall are from Antarctica (see picture below)

I took this pic in 2002 when I visited the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit.
