My theme for the 2017 AtoZ Challenge is "Daily Thoughts".
So here is my thought for the letter O
We seem to have a talent for holding onto things. The past looks so much more appealing than the present.
So often when a door closes, we lament and try desperately to open that door. And in doing that we miss all the doors that are opening or in other words all the opportunities that are available for us. We let our past dominate and define who we are.
It's a natural thing to do to hold onto something that is our comfort zone. The future always looks scary until we are forced to step into it. Only then do we realise that we wasted a lot of time in staring at a closed door or worse still, trying hard to open it, when all along the new one that opened up was hugely better.
Sometime ago I wrote a story that depicts this concept though in quite a different context (For I Have Talked With God).
Instead of a poem today I will end with these words from Lao Tzu

Each day I will post a thought that comes to mind. The first word of the thought will correspond with the letter of the day.
Open doors are often missed because we stare too long at closed doors

Such a lovely thought, yes open doors always get less noticed. I too sometimes think I need to speak less, but then, who cares, all we need to do is live our lives as we like, and I do as I like.

This is so true - (as you would have read in one of my previous posts) I held on to a job for several years longer than I should have - out of fear and insecurity. Leaving that job and taking a risk meant finding a much better one and I have never looked back. Continuing to hold on would have stifled me to death!

Dear Suzy I just found this thought so meaningful and thought-provoking. You are so right we lament over what we don't get but fail to appreciate what we have.
ReplyDeleteA very insightfull post. One wonders which are the doors we miss because of this short sightedness.
ReplyDeleteSo true about how we cling to what we know even if the door is closed and we fail to notice the open doors beckoning to us. I've been there as I stay in my comfort zone until I feel a push, either external or internal to get me to open that other door. Thought provoking. I always enjoy your wisdom, Suzy. Happy A to Z!

Opportunity favors the prepared, so the less time we spend butting our heads against the closed doors, the better.

I love that quote. So true it is. We keep looking at the missed opportunities and lost possibilities that we dont look at the new openings coming our way!!
ReplyDeleteThis is so true. I know myself I'm often guilty of staring at that closed doors, willing them to open, and all the while I'm no doubt missing new opportunities. It's one thing to be aware you do that, quite another to try to break the habit.
ReplyDeleteOne needs a lot of maturity n patience to practice this.
ReplyDeleteOh so true! And sometimes, even when I walk away from the closed doors and enter an open door, I keep looking back at the closed doors wondering if it might open. I drive myself crazy with that.

This is so true! There have been a lot of times when I found letting go of things opening up new possiblities for me. Loved the quote.
ReplyDeleteI have been guilty of staring at close doors, knowing some other door will surely open up for me. I guess it takes better sense to accept that what is gone is gone.

What a wonderful thought. I really needed to read this today. I feel as though you were inspired to post it just for me. Thank you.

beautiful thoughts... That's one way to live a happier and content life, else staring at the door will leave us emotionally drained too, among other things.
ReplyDeleteDoors are always opening and closing around us, aren't they? And often it is our choices that open and shut doors for us.

"When I let go of who I am, I become what I might be." Loved this quote.
ReplyDeleteWe need to have a little bit of faith in the Universe, don't we? Life is full of choices. If plan A doesn't work, we can always make 25 more plans, right? And after that, we can switch to the Hindi alphabet set, then the German, and so on... :D
Btw, I just published my O post @ A to Z of Happiness: Optimism.
Do visit it.
Happy AtoZing!
Some doors when they finally close, can be a great relief too. The past is not always a great place to live in, sometimes it's good to just walk out and shut the door forever on it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the visit!
Best wishes,

One door opens and another closes! Open the mind and look for the positives whilst pushing aside the negatives. Listen to me being profound! That doesn't often happen!
