UBC Day 8 - Past Lives

Day 8 of the Ultimate Blogging Challenge

Joyce Paull Lansky (Catch my words) is the host of this prompt for the Thursday Writer's Post blog hop.

Do you believe in past lives?

I do though I have no proof of this. I guess as I was born in India, past lives and reincarnation is something I grew up with and never questioned.

Whether true or not, I like the idea of past lives and the idea of second chances. It just seems too hard to get  just one single chance to get it all right.

I like the idea that we can meet again somewhere. It makes the passing of my loved ones a little easier to bear.

When my son was little he asked me how old I was. I asked him to guess. So he looked at me and said "Mum you are 40,000 years old". Perhaps I am and have therefore lived many lives.

One of my favourite poems shows the beautiful side of past lives:

Unending Love by Rabindranath Tagore

I seem to have loved you in numberless forms, numberless times…
In life after life, in age after age, forever.
My spellbound heart has made and remade the necklace of songs,
That you take as a gift, wear round your neck in your many forms,
In life after life, in age after age, forever.

Whenever I hear old chronicles of love, it's age-old pain,
It's ancient tale of being apart or together.
As I stare on and on into the past, in the end you emerge,
Clad in the light of a pole-star piercing the darkness of time:
You become an image of what is remembered forever.

You and I have floated here on the stream that brings from the fount.
At the heart of time, love of one for another.
We have played along side millions of lovers, shared in the same
Shy sweetness of meeting, the same distressful tears of farewell-
Old love but in shapes that renew and renew forever.

Today it is heaped at your feet, it has found its end in you
The love of all man’s days both past and forever:
Universal joy, universal sorrow, universal life.
The memories of all loves merging with this one love of ours –
And the songs of every poet past and forever.

Please share your thoughts and enjoy your day.

Warm Regards

  5. Suzy,

Part of me really would like to believe that we live over and over and find our true love and are together of eternity. It is a very soothing thought.

    Oh Hale Yes!

    1. Hi Hale. I'm sure we find our true love, in fact I think we share many lifetimes together - it is a soothing thought. Thanks for visiting.

  6. Lovely poem. I especially like this line: "You become an image of what is remembered forever." Very evocative.

As for past lives, I *think* I might believe in that, and yet I also believe in a heaven, where our spiritual selves spend eternity, eventually reunited with our friends and family. I've never been sure how to reconcile both beliefs.

    Very interesting topic.

    1. Thanks Cheri. Oh I believe in a Heaven where we reunite - it's our eternal home, we just take a trip now and then and visit Earth.

  7. I believe that life continues in some form after the transition we call 'death'. I'm comfortable referring to that as 'reincarnation'. For me, It's a belief that makes my life better whether it's true or not so proof is not really necessary. The concept of Karma is especially important to me ;-)

  8. hmmm to ponder, I believe the universe has a little more in store spiritually than simply dust to dust ashes to ashes. I believe in karma, I believe we are led and directed in our destinies, I believe strongly that Randy and I have been connected in one way or another long before this life we share now. No one seems to want to hear it, I share my beliefs rarely. As I ponder the direction my life is taking at the moment, I know that there is nothing put before me that I cannot manage with the help of the universe. I believe in the concept of astrology and many other spiritual concepts. They used to get all jumbled in my head, now I understand and believe that all can exist together and our faith comes from within. Interesting post, thank you for sharing.
