Are Teachers Undervalued? #vlog #chaiwithsuzy #SuzysIlation

Last week primary and secondary school teachers went on strike in NZ for more pay.

Are they justified or not? Who am I to say?

But I do know that there are some teachers who are truly dedicated to their profession. These are the teachers under whose tutelage students thrive. I have seen this first hand with my children and grateful for these teachers who made learning a pleasure for them.

And then there are others who have somehow managed to demotivate and demoralise my children.

Today's vlog is on the teacher's strike. So grab a cuppa and join me as we watch the teachers march.

The mediocre teacher tells.
The good teacher explains.
The superior teacher demonstrates.
The great teacher inspires.

  1. Hey Suzy, coincidentally my post for this week's #MondayMusings is related to teacher.
About the teacher's being undervalued, I strongly agree this. Coming from the family of teachers and Principals of the high school and junior college, I have seen my aunties toiling hard to ensure that the best knowledge is imparted to the future of the nation. In return, however, their salaries were quite under par. I am what I am today because of the knowledge and values the teachers have instilled in me, next only to my parents. Same is true for my children.
About the teacher's march that you have shared on the video, I could see that teachers kept it disciplined and were well organized. I wish all the luck to the teachers!

    1. Thanks Anagha. Yes teachers were very disciplined. Students who have good teachers all through the years are truly lucky.

  2. I admit I am a public school principal and teacher (retired) and I have gone on strike in NSW when the government has asked too much of us. However, I also know there are not so great teachers in the minority but when your child has one for a year or so it can make life tough all-round. I did see your PM come down from her office on a TV account of the strike. She is impressing us in our messy politics in Australia at the moment.
Thank you for linking up for #lifethisweek. Next week's optional prompt is a photo-based one: Share Your Snaps 27/8/18. Denyse

    1. Thanks Denyse. It's quite devastating when teachers demoralise and demotivate but on the other hand they also teach that not everything in life is going to be a bed of roses.

  3. Yes, so much so. At least here in the States. We need to realize that the teachers are the gateway to moving our children forward. They should be as revered as the sports hero, movie star, singer... and paid equally as well. #mondaymusings xo

    1. Thanks Lisa. I've never understood why movie stars, sports people and entertainers are paid so much. It seems our sense of importance is a little warped.

  4. My father's a retired Professor of Maths. My late mother used to teach primary school students for a while. Teachers play an integral part in shaping up a students life. Their motivation and de motivating words have a stronger impact on a child's confidence. So they definitely deserve a lot of respect and acknowledgement for their hard work. In return, it is essential that they realize how essential it is to nurture those young minds.

    1. Thanks Sonia. Your last sentence is so crucial = their understanding of how important their work is. Not all of them have that but those that do, make such a great difference.

  5. No way can any profession thrive if pay is not appropriate. Teachers must be given good pay.

    1. Thanks Amrita. I think the profession would thrive regardless, the people wouldn't.

  6. I've got a few friends who are teachers. Most will tell you the money for new graduates is good - compared to many other professions - but often they hit a wall further down the track.

And I know that one of the things they struggle with is the increased reporting and bureaucratic commitments.

And I think - like any profession or aspect of life - there are certainly good and bad teachers: those who care and those just viewing it as a job or poorly suited to it.

    1. Thanks Deborah. I think in many professions you hit a wall somewhere down the track and then the only way to get a pay rise is to move. A little hard to do in the public school system.

  7. Great teachers absolutely are undervalued. Unfortunately there are others in teaching not for the right reasons - but that is the same in every profession. We're trusting them to educate our children so to get the best, we need to pay them accordingly.

    1. Thanks Jo. Very true, you get what you pay for. Let's hope these teachers have a better deal and their strike is not wasted.

  8. The right pay is important if we need to keep people's morale up in their respective professions. You're right about different teachers using different methods and having different impact on the kids. I would be keen to know if the strike here had the desired outcome. I loved so many of my teachers and they have all been inspirational in their own way. We cannot undervalue the importance of these people in our kids' lives.

    1. Thanks Shailaja. Don't know yet if the strike outcome was favourable, but the NZ PM did meet the strikers and assured their voices would be heard and considered. I hope there is some agreeable compromise.

  9. Teachers shape student to become citizens of tomorrow. My parents are teachers so I know that sometimes the work load gets too much than what they get - material or in kind. It is important that we respect the profession and how noble it is.

    1. Thanks Parul. I agree, teaching is a very noble profession and we should honour it.
