Five Minute Friday - When

When life is humming and it is joyful, some of us are grateful and give thanks to God, some of us forget and claim life to be in our control and grasp, that we created and steered our own destiny.

When life is hard and we struggle, some of us turn to God for help and comfort, and some of us are angry at Him and blame Him for dishing out these hardships.

When major transformational change occurs in our lives through joy or hardship, these are moments when an opportunity to know God is presented. And then having lived through that, they provide us the means of Divine devotion. And from that some of us then claim to have surrendered to God. But surrender is not an easy thing to do.

When is surrender truly surrender? This is my interpretation of surrender and of course each will have their own.

When both sorrow and joy are accepted and treated alike
When we no longer work in outcomes and destinies and desire control
When the actions of others no longer upset us
When we no longer think of the fruits but only our actions
When all actions are done in love for Universal good and dedicated to God
When actions undertaken in helping others is done silently in joyfulness without need for appreciation or reciprocation.
When the only pride we have is in the love of the Divine.
When with every breath we take we are mindful of the Cosmic Breath
When we have made complete peace with our past and it no longer affects us adversely
When we are at peace with the present and ourselves
When we are at peace with the future without knowing what it is. But just knowing that it is just as it should be.
When we choose to be in the flow of the Universal force and we trust it unflinchingly.
When in every moment (good and bad) we can feel His bliss and know His truth.
When our only desire is to know God.

Then we have surrendered to Him and we are in a state of  Sat Chit Ananda

Sat = Absolute/Divine Truth/Existence
Chit = Divine Consciousness / Love
Ananda = Divine Bliss

How do you define Surrender?

~x~

I am the source of all spiritual and material universes,
for everything emanates from Me.
Knowing this, the wise engage in My devotional service
and worship Me with all their hearts.
~ Lord Krishna, Bhagavad Gita

  4. Thankyou for this postivity Suzy. I truly am tying to live up "When we no longer think of the fruits but only our actions." It's vey hard. Specially for those who have lived all their lives running after the result. Good marks, good family life, good bank balance and good... well, the list is never ending. I don't know if I will ever be able to live life just because it is beautiful but I am trying. Such posts makes me believe that I am doing something right and the universe is guiding me by saying yes. this is the path :)

  5. I loved your definition of surrender. There are so many different ways to define it. When I think of surrender I think of surrendering all material attachments and bowing with humility and devotion down to the lotus feet of Krishna.. Surrender is an opportunity where we trade material attachments for loving devotional service.

  6. Most of the times, the material world around us, force us to run around and for results. Else, we are considered non-worthy.
    Though I agree to what you have mentioned, here. But, the path to attain is very challenging and the most trying.

    1. Thanks Rajlakshmi. Treating sorrow and joy alike does not mean that we don't feel the emotions, it just means that we bring restraint into our emotions. Glad you found it thought provoking.

  10. Lovely post! This is what I believe as well. You must be thankful for the good and the bad...because the bad teaches lessons that ultimately lead to the good. The blessing is have God by your side through it all in trust, faith, and love. ♥

  14. A beautiful post, Suzy. Complete, total surrender is not an easy thing, not easy at all. So many roadblocks on the way, thanks to our big egos. But if we can see it as a progressive journey, each situation in life helping us practice something of the surrender, no matter how many times we fail, we maybe on the path.
    Hope you won't mind my sharing here that last year I too had written something on this very important topic which was published in an e-magazine. http://nextfuture.aurosociety.org/musings-surrender

    1. Thanks Beloo. So true that surrender is a progressive journey. But there does come a moment in time when suddenly that penny drops and surrender becomes complete. Thanks for the link. You explained surrender beautifully and some of my thoughts here are so well expanded on.
