I am taking part in the Write Tribe Festival Of Words 8th - 14th December 2013
Today's personal journey is with Dreams
This is the post I found hardest to write and yet it should be easy as I am such a dreamer.
When I was younger I always thought that when we have a dream we've got to pursue it with all our might. Dreams don't just come true just like that. Or do they?
In the last few years my thoughts on this have changed. Dreams do come true without effort. They just might not come true in the way we expect them to. And we have to allow them to manifest. We have to let go of the need for it to come true, in the way we imagine and at the moment we want them. The Universe unfortunately does not work like that.
When I was young I wanted to write but I was led to believe that writing was not one of my strengths. My essays were never published in any school magazines though I often thought what I wrote was a whole heap better than the ones that did get published.
So instead I wrote diaries and I wrote letters. I had so many pen friends around the world. It's amazing how much of the world I learned from them. And to date I still keep in touch with 4 of them. I've known them all for over 40 years. I've even met 2 of them, but I digress.
I dreamed I would write someday. I wrote these little books and illustrated them. The only person who read these was my dad of course. And then of course as I grew older, in tidying up my closet, they would go into the bin.
Then somewhere down the track, I let go of this obsessive need to write, though I never let go of the dream. And then many years later, the web opened up the gates for creative writing.
Would I have ever imagined I would write this way? Never in a thousand years. The web simply did not exist in our sphere back then.
And I would never have imagined that I would write poetry. But about 10 or so years ago, suddenly these poems would appear into my mind in dreams or in flashes of inspiration and I was compelled to write them down. One day a friend suggested I should publish my poems and hence my poetry blog was born. Writing poetry fills me with so much joy.
Dreams do come true, but just not in the way we imagine them to. I know when I'm trying hard to make my dream come true, that I am actually drifting further away from what is meant for me and preventing my dream from coming true.
This poem sums up my point very nicely.
I never let go of my dreams, but I have stopped trying to make them come true.
Dreams do come true, easily, if only we let them emerge in their own time, in their own way, and when we remove those blocks in their path that we place ourselves by trying hard to make things happen, or chasing that dream, or writing the script. Might let you ponder on that one and leave you with ...
You gotta have a dream
My Personal Journey so far:
Wish you a day of dreams come true.

As children bring their broken toys
With tears for us to mend.
I brought my broken dreams to God
Because He was my Friend.
But then instead of leaving Him
In peace to work alone,
I hung around and tried to help
With ways that were my own.
At last I snatched them back and cried,
"How could You be so slow"-
"My child," He said,
"What could I do? You never did let go."
"What could I do? You never did let go."

You gotta have a dream
If you don't have a dream
How you gonna have a dream come true?

Warm Regards
What a beautiful write up! I simply loved the poetry that you put up, it was a much needed message for me :) That is what writing is for, to reach to people and change their lives if only for a moment. Getting published is just a way that could be done.
ReplyDeleteThanks Maithili. I'm glad my post was a message for you. I love it when that happens. It makes it all worthwhile. Thank you.
DeleteOne needs to dream to make them come true. Inspirational post, well done
ReplyDeleteThanks Cifar. Glad my post inspired you and thanks for visiting.
DeleteInteresting perspective and a contrast to the general belief of 'Go confidently in the direction of your dreams, work on them and make them come true!'
ReplyDeleteHi Shilpa, That perspective never worked for me - maybe my dreams are so big, they can only come true with the help of the Universe. But then when I talk of dreams I'm talking of the really big ones. Thanks for reading my post.
Deletei hope all your dreams see the light of the day... poetry, creative writing, illustrating, and getting published- i quite resonate your dreams too...
ReplyDeleteThanks Pratikshya. Glad you resonate with my dreams. And thanks for visiting.
DeleteWe all have at sometime let go of these dreams only for them to return to us in different ways... Keep writing we love your poetry as they come each day to us :-)
ReplyDeleteRicha
Thanks Richa. Glad you like what I write. That inspires me to write even more :)
DeleteSuzy - Thanks for the mention. you had a dream, and unknowingly you worked on it - Through continuous writing! I agree that the universe works in ways we can never understand or imagine.. But the key point is to never give up on your dreams! Your personal story left me with so much food for thought! Thanks for posting..
ReplyDeleteThanks Nischala. And you are welcome. Your post truly deserved mention. Yes the Universe works in magnificent ways, if only we let it and stop interfering in it's plan.
DeleteAnd Suzy - I so agree with you that poetry can touch, connect and transform your life in ways that prose probably cannot! I have re-discovered it (reading / writing) and enjoying so far!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love poetry - never thought though that I would write that way. I was pleasantly surprised.
DeleteDreams do come true, but not in the way we imagined it to be - Going through a disillusioned phase, I really needed to read this now.
ReplyDeleteWonderful post !
Thanks Iihahs, Glad my post could be of help.
DeleteSuzy, you are absolutely correct about our dreams and God's perfect timing for them to come true. We cannot force his hand; we must be patient and pray Thy will be done. I've been through the forcing stage and learned the hard way, but, essentially, the glad way, that the best dreams come true when we wait upon the Lord.
ReplyDeleteSo glad He chose you to be a writer. You are awesome!
Blessings, my friend!
Thanks Martha for your very sweet comment. Yes, all occurs in Divine timing and in His way and isn't it always just about perfect? Blessings to you to my dear friend.
DeleteIt's very disappointing when people discourage you about your dreams but the best thing is to keep them alive with hope, hard work and determination. Published or not published, if you love to write, you're a writer!:)
ReplyDeleteThanks Tarang. And ever so true, if you write, you're a writer.
Deleteenjoyed reading this post! I agree if we let go and just let dreams come as they will, they do come true even if it's not how one originally thought it would be!
ReplyDeleteThanks Robyn. Glad you enjoyed my post.
DeleteI just loved this post..very inspiring!
ReplyDeleteThanks Payal. Glad you found it inspiring.
DeleteThis was beautiful Suzy...sometimes we do have to let go and just believe and have faith in thr power of the universe! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Aditi. And the Universe always delivers - but in its own time and in its own way.
DeleteIt's a powerful take on dreams. Indeed, we need to let go of clusters and dream..keep faith and take baby steps..unfulfilled dreams may not be so far away, Suzy:)
ReplyDeleteThanks Vishal. So truem unfulfilled dreams are not so far away - now that's exciting.
DeleteTouching and inspiring <3
ReplyDeleteThanks Me.
DeleteThis was inspiring. I never dreamed I would write or that I even could...but here I am writing and people are reading my words. I think dreams do come true in their own ways and own time. ♥
ReplyDeleteThanks Kathy. They sure do.
