ABC Wednesday - Architecture

This year Architecture is close to my heart as my son is studying to become an architect.

But the particular type of architecture that I love is an arch.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines an arch as:
"a curved structural member spanning an opening and serving as a support
(as for the wall or other weight above the opening)"

I'm not sure what it is about an arch that appeals, but I think arches look quite imposing and grand.

Here are some pictures I took way back in 1993 when I toured Europe. Loved these arches.

inside the Roman Forum, Rome

Arch of Constantine, Rome

Arch of Titus, Rome

Arc de Triomphe, Paris

  1. Once your son joins Architecture course, he'll tell you about types of arches! I can as well, of course.

  4. I almost did architecture this time, too, but went with something else. The architecture is Europe is so fascinating, and I especially love it in Oxford, England.

  9. I love arches, too, Suzy. Maybe it's because their shape reminds us of rainbows? Just wondering . . .

  11. Hi Suzy,

You are right arches do have that grandiose feel to them and it was an important part of Roman architecture. Though I am not an architecture student, couple of years of freelancing for an architectural magazine has taught me a lot. Beautiful pictures. Keep up the good work.

  12. I love looking at the various creative forms of architecture that are used in creating what could be quite ordinary buildings, etc. into pieces of art.
